Supporting America’s Military Families

Nearly two-thirds of Americans are more afraid of running out of money than death. And only half of those with a retirement plan believe they will live comfortably in retirement,

This includes families with U.S. armed forces members. In fact, half of military family middle-class households are somewhat or very concerned about the risk of serious decline in their financial situation according to a survey conducted with ACLI’s Financial Resilience Index.

Nearly 1/4 of military families moved to a new city last year. Not surprisingly, military spouses are unemployed at more than four times the rate of civilians. Nearly every move means a new job search in an unfamiliar location without a professional network.

These moves also affect the families’ ability to plan and save for retirement. Many spouses put their careers on hold to support their service members, hindering their ability to build adequate retirement funds.

I recently moderated a webinar with USAA and Blue Star Families where we discussed ways that America’s life insurers provide military families with the tools they need for a secure financial future. Check it out here.
